College Postgraduate Scholarships for Doctoral Study
I would like to identify areas in which the College could offer PhD scholarships later this year. The intention would be to advertise these scholarships nationally and internationally as part of a strategy to attract doctoral students into UCC. Such an approach has been shown to attract some interesting applications from students who would not otherwise consider UCC as a possible University for further study. The scholarships would complement the range of scholarships for research already offered by the College.
The criteria would be:
For doctoral research (with or without a prior one year's study on an MPhil)
Fees + a small stipend
Offered to students registering in one of the primary departments of the College ACSSS
Offered to students registering for the first time on a Doctoral programme in October 2007
Offered subject to the normal application and approval process
The initial task is to identify research areas that have both potential and capacity.
The areas identified could represent the research interests of a number of staff (possibly also from different departments). These staff must have the willingness and sufficient capacity to undertake the supervision of at least two doctoral students.
The areas identified should be reasonably broad, but not as broad as a whole discipline; e.g. "twentieth-century music" rather than "music".
The staff who would be willing to supervise the research should be identified and it should be confirmed that they do have sufficient spare capacity to act as supervisors. They should normally be full-time permanent members of staff.
Any applications should address the above issues and be sent to the Head of College by Monday, December 11th, 2006.
